We're always on the look-out for new and original locations, but sometimes there's something particular we need. It may be that a new style is becoming more fashionable, or that filming is moving its axis from London to other regions of the UK. Maybe there are property types that are under-represented in our agency. Find out what we're currently looking for below - you never know, you could have the latest hot property!

COVID - friendly

While filming on location has always tested the organisation skills of any production crew, filming on location after lockdown is even more challenging than normal. We're finding that in a post-lockdown environment, certain features are proving even more popular.

We're asked time and time again for houses which have the following:

  1. Space. When cast and crew have to observe social distancing, it stands to reason that the houses with plenty of big rooms are going to be in demand. And its not just inside the house where space is at a premium, large gardens and driveways give more options for keeping people separate and safe.
  2. Separate space for the owner and family. While some productions will have the budget to pay for the family to stay in a hotel, there will be many where their budget won't stretch to hotel accommodation. If you have somewhere else to go, whether onsite in a separate annex, or in a second home, then that will be a huge help to logistics.
  3. Versatility. The more that a production can get done in one location the better - the last thing the production will want is to pack everything up and move somewhere else, and have to repeat all the logistics, deep cleaning and COVID safety procedures again. So if your home has a variety of interior styles, a big garden with several different features and even a garage or some garden rooms, then it could prove popular.
  4. Several points of access. We have all got used to going round the supermarkets in a clearly defined route, so it will come as no surprise to learn that a house which allows for a similar circular flow to be established is really critical. If people can enter through one door and exit from another, the better it will be from a social distancing point of view.
  5. Completely vacant properties. Everything is easier when the house is empty! If you have a vacant property, now is the time to register with a location agency.

Finally, the attitude of the home-owner is also crucial in these uncertain times. Post lockdown, everything takes longer to organise and things may change by the minute. An element of patience and flexibility is needed like never before.

Film and photoshoot locations in London

Despite the regional push to create film hubs in Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham, London remains the predominant centre for filming in the UK. A 2018 study by Film London calculated that film makers brought revenues of almost £170 million to the capital. And its not just feature films, an estimated 80% of the UK's production companies also reside in and around London. It can come as no surprise therefore, to learn that we see the highest demand for film locations in London.

We are looking for every type of film and photoshoot location in London. As well as typical townhouses and urban spaces, other popular locations are houses that don't necessarily look as though they are in London. So houses that could be in the county, or even Europe or America are always in demand by film makers who don't want the additional costs of transporting all the crew to far-flung places. 

Everyday family homes

Many people when they think of film or photoshoot locations will think of grand-design type properties, whether period-perfect country houses or architectural modern masterpieces. So it may come as a surprise to learn that for TV commercials especially, the type of house we get more requests for than virtually any other is the everyday family home. Why is this? And what is an everyday family home? 

While aspirational houses have their place for luxury and high-end brands, many companies want to appeal to the mass market, and to be able to do that they need to relate to their audience. They do that by showing their product being used by people like them in homes like theirs.

Manchester locations

In 2011 the BBC started moving more production into the North West to a new creative hub in Salford, Manchester. With it moved jobs and a higher demand for film and photoshoot locations. Vacant buildings: houses, mansions, schools hospitals and offices

Empty buildings are always in demand for longer-term filming hires. They give a production the ability to base themselves, control and dress the building to suit their filming requirements. Ideally, the building should not be further than 25 miles outside the M25.
